Development

When it comes to your plans and aspirations for the future, you’re very much in charge. We encourage our graduates to actively manage their own careers by searching out and exploring the broad range of opportunities available throughout the business. But we’ve also put in place a strong framework of support to help you make the most of those opportunities.

That framework is evident in the structured nature of all our leadership tracks. Naturally each one has its own unique features and, more to the point, is tailored to fit around you. But there’s nevertheless plenty of common ground in the way we develop our graduates.

Wherever you join, from your induction onwards, everything is geared towards providing you with a clear and lasting leadership perspective as your knowledge of the business grows. From the rotational training to your march towards professional qualifications, development workshops to technical skills training, every last element of the programme is an opportunity just waiting to be seized.

Your two-year development road map

The programme begins with your induction and transition week. Beyond that, there will be initiatives common to each phase like ongoing support including buddy catch-ups. Similarly, you’ll enjoy career management, online global social networks and communities of interest, and our online resources. You’ll continue to develop your technical expertise in your own functional area, as well as having the opportunity to study for professional qualifications.

During the programme

The first phase of your development is all about discovery and satisfying your curiosity. It all kicks off with our transition week, which will provide you with an introduction to Barclays from our senior leaders, an understanding of their expectations for the FLDP, and also a great chance to meet the rest of your cohort of future leaders, who will form an important part of your support network over the coming months and years. The various challenges, simulations and training exercises that we run will help identify the individual strengths and development needs we can support you with over the two-year journey.

As you move into the second phase of development, we will do all we can to support your personal learning and growth. A series of developmental masterclasses, guest speakers, and team transformational learning sets will help you create your personal leadership journey, supported by your mentor who will be assigned to you when you start to help you make the right career choices and get the best out of the development opportunities on offer.

Whichever programme you join, you’ll find that professional education is a core component of your progress. For our part, we’ll sponsor you to gain the professional qualifications that will round out your development in your chosen field and ensure that you’ll also benefit from technical training specific to your area. For more information on professional qualifications, please refer to programme-specific pages.

Regular progress updates against a clear personal learning dashboard will ensure you know exactly how you’re getting on at every stage, and regular evaluation, assessment and 360° feedback will keep you on the right track. Business challenge projects, ongoing training and e-learning, and regular coaching will help develop your leadership skills ready for the next stage of your journey.

After the programme

Towards the end of the programme, it’s time to start thinking about your first permanent role, which means an increase in status and responsibility. While you’ll likely choose to stay in the business area you joined during the scheme, you don’t have to. Almost all jobs are advertised internally on our website, so the skills and experience you’ve gained could land you a job practically anywhere in Barclays.

With 1:1 feedback and coaching, career management workshops and training in interview techniques, you will have extensive support in finding your permanent role, and by this point you will have built up a wealth of contacts to help you weigh up the various options and decide what’s right for you in the long term.

What’s more, the end of the programme doesn’t mean the end of your development. Not by a long shot. Working your way to the top is never a solo effort, so your journey will be guided by an ongoing personal development plan. As part of our global talent pool you will find an array of opportunities to keep on driving your career to new levels.
